Description and characteristics of the Ragdoll
Ragdoll is a cat that can be of imposing build, particularly the males who have the distinctive sign of being often much larger than the females. Like the Birman, the basic coat is called "color point": solid color, in light tones (white to cream), with the ends in darker color (generally in gray tones). There are also bicolor varieties. Typically, the breed standard requires the Ragdoll to have blue eyes and may have patterns on the face that resemble a mask. The hair is semi-long and very abundant, reminiscent of that of its cousin the Persian. Its physiognomy has a fairly heavy frame, with a broad face and small triangular ears. The legs are rather short, the end of the paws rounded and wide, the tail long and carried in “plume”.
History and origins of Ragdolls
Ragdoll breed is relatively recent since it was born in the 1960s in California, the product of the crossing of a Persian Angora type cat (without papers) and a Sacred Birman. This "marriage" carried out by the Persian breeder Ann Baker, at the risky start, gave kittens with a very sociable character, devoid of any aggressiveness, extremely cuddly and relaxed. Ann Baker, happy with this unexpected result and convinced by this cross, decided to work on fixing this new breed which she baptized “Ragdoll”: literally, “rag doll”, in reference to the quiet and malleable temperament of these cats. Further crosses allowed to refine the breed to finally give birth to the Ragdoll that we know today, recognized in 1971 in the United States and introduced in France in 1986.
How to take care of Ragdoll cat
The Ragdoll requires regular brushing, because its fur tends to tangle but also for the health of its hair and skin, especially during moulting. A warm bath can also be helpful to get rid of dead hair, followed by brushing as gently as possible. It is recommended to brush his teeth once a week to prevent gingivitis. It is important to regularly check the condition of the eyes and ears: in case of impurities, you will use a clean and soft textile to wash the corner of the eyes, or a cotton soaked in lukewarm water (to be renewed for each eye). If the inside of the ears is waxy, they should be cleaned with a cotton ball soaked in lukewarm water and 50% diluted cider vinegar. You can also use a veterinary product designed for this purpose. Finally, we will monitor the length of the claws, to be trimmed if necessary with a suitable nail clipper (in pet stores). Ask your veterinarian to show you how to do this.
